Ender’s Game Budget Over $100 Million

imgresGigi Pritzker Protects Ender’s Deep Character

In a recent New York Time’s article featuring Ender’s Game producer, Gigi Pritzker, we were clued in on a number of interesting Ender’s Game tidbits. The most interesting tidbit states that the Ender’s Game film budget was over $100 million. For reference, the budget for The Hunger Games was $88 million. No doubt most of this budget will be spent on post-production special effects.

The article outlines OddLot’s smart move to snap up the rights to the Ender’s Game film. “‘They’re all running into it, not away from it,’ Mr. Nathanson [copresident of OddLot] said of OddLot’s decision to double its film count to at least three or four a year, and to dig deeper into the ‘Ender’s Game’ business, if the movie meets its goals.” What exactly these goals are is not mentioned in the article.

Fans of Ender’s Game will be pleased to hear that Pritzker [sought to preserve] the depth of the lead character [Ender Wiggin].” She also thinks that the movie-going audience is finally ready for a film like Ender’s Game. “‘I think ‘Hunger Games’ cracked the code,'” Pritzker says.

The article also details the various misfortunes Ender’s Game has had at other Hollywood studies, read more here.

Did You Submit a Question to OSC via SmartPop?

EndersWorld_FrontCoverACT FAST!

Last summer, the SmartPop staff put out a call for Ender’s Game fans to submit their questions to Orson Scott Card to be answered in their upcoming compilation of Ender’s Game essays.  If you submitted a question to the SmartPop site, then listen up! SmartPop has agreed to include the names of everyone whose questions were used in the book and offer a free copy upon publication.  BUT, they need your help.  Many individuals only gave pseudonyms/handles when submitting their questions.  We would like to be able to list our fans’ real identities if they wish, so the book can be passed around the dinner table and bragged about ad nauseum.  If you submitted a question and want your name included, please send both your SmartPop alias and your real name to EC Spencer (wiggine@gmail.com), who will compile the information and submit it to SmartPop.  (If you don’t remember what you wrote, all the questions can be found HERE).  But please act fast!  The books are almost to the printers, and we will have to give whatever we come up with in the next few days.

It’s a new year and that means you need a new calendar. Darian from Art of Darian was kind enough to make an Ender’s Game – themed calendar for everyone. It features Ender’s Game fan art, links to various Ender sites, and birthdays of most of the cast and crew. Enjoy! Click here to download.

[Side note: The calendar ends on the US premiere of the Ender’s Game movie on November 1, 2013. While this might be inconvenient, we might have a new Ender’s Game calendar by then anyway.]

New Details on ‘Ender’s World’ Anthology

EndersWorld_FrontCoverEnder’s World

Attention Ender fans! We finally have new details about the Ender’s World anthology, including some of the fan questions Orson Scott Card hand-picked to answer and the full list of contributors! The book, published by Smart Pop, hits shelves April 2, 2013. Pre-order it on Amazon here. For more information, read below.

Card has teamed up with Smart Pop to produce Ender’s World: Fresh Perspectives on the SF Classic Ender’s Game, a collection of science fiction, fantasy, and YA writers, along with military strategists, offering new insight into Ender’s Game and other stories in the Ender chronology. Edited and with brand new content by Card himself, it’s the perfect book at the perfect time for old fans and new readers alike to (re)enter the world of Ender’s Game in preparation for the November 2013 film adaptation.

In Ender’s World, Card answers some of readers’ biggest questions, from What qualities did the Battle School tests look for? to If you could go back and re-write Ender’s Game, what would you change?
In addition, contributors who are also Ender’s Game fans present a spectrum of thoughtful, illuminating pieces and analyses: military strategists Colonel Tom Ruby and John F. Schmitt offer insights into (and from) the human–formic war; Aaron Johnston, coauthor of Card’s Formic Wars prequel novels, explains why Ender is a short Clint Eastwood; Grammy-nominated songwriter Janis Ian argues that, in the Ender universe, size matters; Matt Nix, creator and executive producer of Burn Notice, uses Ender’s Game as an often humorous guide to life, from angsty teenagerhood to the present; New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman remembers the first time he read Ender’s Game, and offers a meditation on the book’s biggest moral questions.

Here’s the full list of contributors to Ender’s World:

Hilari Bell
John Brown
Mette Ivie Harrison
Janis Ian
Aaron W. Johnston
Alethea Kontis
Mary Tobinette Kowal

Earth Afire Cover Art and Synopsis

sfsi0c-20SF Signal has just released the cover art and synopsis of Earth Afire, the second novel in the First Formic Wars Trilogy co-written by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston. The First Formic Wars Trilogy is a prequel trilogy to Ender’s Game. Read the full the full synopsis below.

100 years before Ender’s Game, the aliens arrived on Earth with fire and death. This is the story of the First Formic War.

Victor Delgado beat the alien ship to Earth, but just barely. Not soon enough to convince skeptical governments that there was a threat. They didn’t believe that until space stations and ships and colonies went up in sudden flame.

And when that happened, only Mazer Rackham and the Mobile Operations Police could move fast enough to meet the threat.

Earth Afire will be published on June 4, 2013. You can pre-order it on Amazon, here, and if you’re curious as to how this one falls into Enderverse, we made this timeline. Click here for a larger version of the cover art.
