Talk to Your Children
Last week we brought you a story about one parent’s fight to keep Ender’s Game out of the classroom. Ender’s Game author, Orson Scott Card spoke out on the Doug Wright Show earlier this week.
Card says, “The charge of pornography on this is as far as I know not actually leveled against Ender’s Game, or if it is it’s then that’s an obvious mistake because the teacher actually read some material that I would have actually been disturbed by if so teacher were reading it to my kids.” He adds, “It has nothing to do with Ender’s Game.”
“There’s nothing in ‘Ender’s Game’ that they are not completely familiar with,” On the use of certain bad language in Ender’s Game, “These kids are 14- year-olds in South Carolina. I know for a fact it is impossible that they aren’t hearing those words at least once a week, if not every day.”
Card points out that no matter what book is being read, parents should to talk to their children about the material they’re reading. You can listen to Doug Wright’s full interview with Orson Scott Card here. Since this interview, the Aiken Standard says the teacher will not face criminal charges.
