First Official Ender’s Game Movie Still Released!

EW.com has just released an exclusive very first official look at the Ender’s Game movie via a still shot!

Click here for a bigger picture! Is it everything you hoped it would be? What do you notice of interest? Sound off in the comments below!

In addition to the first look picture, the article also mentions that the official Ender’s Game Movie Facebook Page by Lionsgate has just been launched as well as an interview with director Gavin Hood. He explains,

“The relationship between [Harrison] and Asa was very close, but he didn’t overly befriend him off the set. He helped Asa by allowing that slight sense of intimidation to be there.”

If you guys think Asa looks too tall for Ender consider what Gavin says,

“The decision was made very early on to compress the time period into about a year, so that we could have the same actor from beginning to end… We were trying to hit that sweet spot right around 12, which Asa fits in very nicely.”

“I am a fan, and I have had a desire to do this and have been working on this now for nearly four years. That ending — and the complex moral questions that it raises — is one of the reasons why I love the book,I promise you that it is very much there.”

Read the full interview with director Gavin Hood here.

The Ender’s Game movie will be released in theaters on November 1, 2013. Read more about the cast here and “like” us on Facebook for the latest Ender’s Game movie news!

P.S. Did anyone else notice in the larger version of the picture that they’re wearing SOCKS in BATTLE SCHOOL?!

OSC Talks Ender’s Game Movie

In a Q&A book signing for ‘Ruins’ in Orem, Utah earlier this month Ender’s Game author, Orson Scott Card, had a lot to say about the Ender’s Game movie. Although we’ve heard many of his talking points before, there are a few tidbits worth listening to. A frequent commenter on IMDB, Haley’s Comet, put together a brief summary of the talk:

Part 1
– The film will come out a year from now November 2013. The movie is shot and wrapped.
– Orson has a small one line voice-over role in the film as a pilot. This is during a scene where Ender and Graff are on their way to “Fleet Headquarters”(1)
– The above scene isn’t in the book, and furthermore Card notes that effectively NONE of the scenes(2) from the movie are from the book and vice versa.
– The Battle Room scenes will be very limited in scope and complexity and there is not likely to be more one complete battle(3). “It’s about the characters. it’s about the relationships… which is what the book is about.”(4)
– While on set Card watch Harrison and Asa perform some scenes. He stated that the mic was really close and they spoke in low voices. “That’s because most of this is going to be close-ups…”(5)

Part 2
– Card laments about part of what took so long to get Ender’s Game made into a film was the child actor issues, which means short hours. He noted that every day filming is a million dollars toward the budget.(6)
– All of the kids in the film did their own wire work (7) because walking and collisions in CGI “always looks false.”
– Cirque du Soleil did all of the distant shots/stunt work, but also trained the kids to mimic the movements, which was agonizing but put them in top physical shape.
– Card said that how Ender’s Game does in the theater will determine if his future projects get funded (specifically speaking of “Enchantment” and “Alvin Maker (Seventh Son?)”(8)
– Card stated that although Ben Kingsley didn’t look half-Maori to him, he is sure he could pull of any role included that of Mazer Rackham.

Part 3 (this part has SPOILERS for the novel Shadows in Flight)
– Card had several versions of the screenplay for Ender’s Game over the years, none of which got made into a film. The final screenplay was by Gavin Hood.
– Card did not read the script version (not written by him) for Ender’s Game. He approved them based on the review of his friend Aaron Johnston and Card’s wife.

Part 4
– Why is it taking a year for Ender’s Game to be released? “They’re doing CGI..they make the live action scenes and then they build they make the animated film around it. But, there are sets that don’t exist anywhere.”
– Card says that he will probably know when the trailer will come out “a day or two after you do.” He says he gets all of his info like that from his fans.
– “With Ender’s Game I raided my own family, but I changed so much…” So some characters are loosely based on some Card’s family members.

Part 5
Nothing really about the movie in this part, but some humorous instructions on what to do (and not to do) in the book signing line, a comment by Card that he writes “Unitarian Fiction” (a great comment for those who like to argue about him putting his political views in his works) and an appearance by Jake Black, the writer of The Authorized Ender’s Companion.

Summit Releases Ender’s Game Movie Synopsis

Full Synopsis Released

Just a quick little post, Summit has released the full synopsis for the Ender’s Game movie. Have a little glance below:

In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

Spoiler alert anyone? So we know that Ender is leading solders “into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race” isn’t that the twist; that it is not a game? I hope I’m wrong and reading too much into this, because I really want the twist in the movie.

Ender’s Game Movie to Showcase 60% Special Effects

Digital Domain Still Holds a Large Stake in Ender’s Game

In case you missed it, Galloping Horses and Reliance Media, acquired the Ender’s Game special effects company Digital Domain in September. Digital Domain CEO Ed Ulbrich says that the acquisition transforms Digital Domain from a service provider to content owner, which has been a “dream from the very beginning.” Consequently, Ender’s Game will be the first film Galloping Horses and Digital Domain will work on together as Digital Domain continues to hold a 37.5% stake in the Ender’s Game film. The acquisition will not delay the release of the Ender’s Game movie.

In light of a long and quiet post-production we finally have some news via China Daily. About 60% of the Ender’s Game movie will contain special effects.

About 60 percent of the film, focusing on conflicts between humankind and aliens in the Earth’s future, features special visual effects, according to Ivy Zhong, vice-chairperson of Galloping Horse.

Is 60% too much or too little special effects? Tell us in the comments!

The Ender’s Game movie will be released on November 1, 2013.

Viola Davis Didn’t Read ‘Ender’s Game’ Novel

Was it a mistake?

In an interview with BlackFilm.Com actress Viola Davis spoke about her as Major Anderson in the Ender’s Game movie. When asked if she read Ender’s Game she says,

“I did not read the book. […] In Ender’s Game, in the book, Major Anderson is actually a male so […] I just felt like this is a different character and I didn’t feel like I could learn anything from reading the book as much as I could learn something from studying the psychology of people who have come back from war and experience post-traumatic stress disorder and I felt that was much more valuable for me.”

Watch the full interview below. Skip to 8:50 for the Ender’s Game talk.

Do you think she’ll be able to pull off Major Anderson without having read the book? Sound off in the comments!

Digital Domain Acquired by Reliance MediaWorks and Galloping Horses.

And the winner is…

Reliance MediaWorks submitted a winning bid of $30.2 million dollars for 30% of Digital Domain, the Ender’s Game special effects company. The bid was made in partnership with Galloping Horses. Galloping Horses is a Chinese firm that focuses on film and television. Together these two companies have a combined value of $25 billion.

Both companies have happy about the winning bid.

“We are thrilled to have found a partner in Reliance MediaWorks that is as committed as we are to ensuring Digital Domain’s continued excellence and success,” Zhong, vice chairman of Galloping Horses, said in a statement today.

“We have had a wonderful working relationship with Digital Domain over the years and we could not be happier to take it further through the joint Galloping Horse – Reliance acquisition,” said Venkatesh Roddam of Reliance MediaWorks.

Through their acquirement of Digital Domain the companies gained a stake in the Ender’s Game film. It remains to see if these companies will stake in Ender’s Game.

The Ender’s Game film will be released on November 1, 2013.
