“Ender’s Game” Twitter News Round-Up #6

7 May–13 May 2012

This week saw quite a few departures on the “Ender’s Game” set, but also celebrated a birthday for director Gavin Hood and continued filming with Harrison Ford and the central cast.

  • On Wednesday, May 9th, Brandon Soo Hoo (Fly Molo) said that he had wrapped filming, and several Battle School extras also reported their last days on set.

  • Producer Roberto Orci chimed in as several cast members expressed their feelings about a great day on set.  These scenes with Ender, Bean, Alai, and Graff (Asa Butterfield, Aramis Knight, Suraj Partha, and Harrison Ford) could be anything – what do you think they’re filming now?

  • Director Gavin Hood celebrated his 49th birthday on May 12th, and was tweeted many well-wishes from cast and crew.

I hope everyone is enjoying their week, and don’t forget to post any questions for the “Ender’s Game” crew on the official Blog before this Wednesday!  @Wiggin47

Official Ender’s Game Blog Post #8: Ask Your Movie Questions

The Official Ender’s Game Production blog updated this week inviting readers to ask their burning questions about the movie.

The post begins,

“‘I need you to be clever, Bean.  I need you to think of solutions to
problems we haven’t seen yet.’

In Dragon Army, Ender encourages input.  So do we.  That’s why we’re
opening this blog up to you, the readers.”

“Ender’s Game” Twitter News Round-Up #5

2 May–6 May 2012

Not a whole lot new to report from the set of “Ender’s Game” this week.  The cast spent their weekend relaxing at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, eating sushi, exploring abandoned Six Flags amusement parks, and watching “The Avengers.”

As far as filming goes, it appears that shooting has now ceased in the Battle Room as stunt coordinator Garrett Warren bids farewell to our young soldiers.

Also on Friday, Asa Butterfield (Ender Wiggin) made us all insanely jealous…For those who are not aware, May 4th is celebrated as Star Wars Day – “May the Fourth Be With You!”

And lastly, Aramis Knight (Bean) is shooting up almost as quickly as the character he portrays…

Thanks again for reading, and I hope you all have another wonderful “Ender’s Game” week! @Wiggin47

Official Ender’s Game Blog Post #7

This week Ender’s Game Blog gave us a sneak peek of the cast training. They also gave some info upon Dragon Army.

Dragon Army has come to be known as a repository of misfits and failures.  As a member of this unit, you’re supposed to live, breathe (fire?) and fight as one cohesive and selfless unit.  Success as one.  Defeat as one.  Unfortunately for Dragon Army, their reputation is the latter.

You can read the whole official post here.

It’s so exciting to read about the infamous Dragon Army. One scene I’m most thrilled to see is Ender awakening the sleeping Dragon.

Nonso Anozie talks Ender’s Game Movie

The Root recently interviewed Sargent Dap actor, Nonso Anozie. Read what he has to say about Ender’s Game below:

TR: Tell me about Ender’s Game, the movie you’re filming in New Orleans with Viola Davis.

NA: It’s starring Hugo’s Asa Butterfield — we worked together on Nanny McPhee Returns — Harrison Ford, Viola Davis and Ben Kingsley. Ender’s Game is set 60 years from now; Earth has been attacked by aliens, and we are preparing a pre-emptive attack on the [next set of] intruders. It’s really dark, actually. I’m a hard-ass in this one. In The Grey I was a bit soft and friendly; in Game of Thrones, Xaro is smooth; and inEnder’s Game, I’m just angry all the time. I like the variances of characters I get to play.

That’s all he’s got to say about the Ender’s Game movie, but if you want to ready more of his interview click here. Give me your best impression of Sargent Dap shouting at launchies in the comments!

“Ender’s Game” Twitter News Round-Up #4

23 April-1 May 2012

Following in the footsteps of last week’s Production Blog, the Twitter News Round-Up for this week was slightly delayed…  My apologies, but I hope the content makes up for the tardiness!  Not only do we have another mention of Harrison Ford (Colonel Graff) on set, but several new cast members have been identified as “Ender’s Game” extras!

  • This last week saw continued filming in the zero-gravity Battle Room, with several of the actors tweeting their enjoyment on set.

(Conor Carroll is playing Bernard – no Twitter account yet, though everyone is encouraging him to get one.)

  • Brandon Soo Hoo (Fly Molo) tweeted that he will be leaving the set around May 4th.  Not sure what this means for the filming schedule.

  • And Asa Butterfield (Ender Wiggin) is growing up way too fast!  Already taller than most of the other cast members, it’s hard to picture little Ender being picked on when he’s bigger than all his bullies.  Wondering how a certain scene with Moises Arias (Bonzo Madrid) is going to play out…

  • Now for all those who enjoy following the cast and crew on Twitter, I have identified several more Battle School extras with active accounts and stories to tell.  One of them has even given us a mention of Harrison Ford during a break on the “Ender’s Game” set (tweet posted May 1st)!

You can follow the “Ender’s Game” main cast and crew on this public Twitter list, and the Ender’s Game extras on this one!

Thanks to everyone for reading this week’s Twitter News Round-Up!  If you have any questions or comments, please let us know!  And if you’ve got news that I missed, feel free to contact me at @Wiggin47.

I Loved Ender’s Game, Whats next?

Someone recently enquired, “What do people ask you most about Ender’s Game?” I simply responded, “What do I read next?” The problem with this question is the answer, more often than not I am asked this on Twitter so only have 140 characters to respond with, that isn’t nearly enough. Consider this my response.

Firstly, why the confusion? Well, the cover of Speaker for the Dead says “Book 2 of the Ender Saga”, Ender in Exile is tagged with the line “the direct sequel to Ender’s Game” and even Ender’s Shadow is called the companion to Ender’s Game! Easy to see why I’m asked this question. Now I will explain what to read, when, why, and I won’t spoil any story lines.

Obviously, the first thing to read is Ender’s Game. If you haven’t already bought it, get a new edition. Some small changes have been made to bring a few points into line with the other books. Don’t worry if you’re a collector then you can buy an older edition later, but read the new one first. Next thing to read is … wait for it… Speaker for the Dead. This story is the reason Ender’s Game was written as a novel. It also won both the Hugo and Nebula awards (as did Ender’s Game), so you know it’s going to be good. As it turns out, Speaker for the Dead is the first part of a larger story arc that concerns the planet Lusitania, also including the books Xenocide and Children of the Mind. I would suggest reading these as a trilogy, don’t expect the first two to finish the story, in fact don’t expect Orson Scott Card to finish a story.

So, you finished Children of the Mind, you got a little bogged down with Xenocide but it was worth it, and you still want more. Well, it’s Shadow time. After spending the last little while on Lusitania you are going to love returning to battle school with Ender’s Shadow, remembering the kids you loved in Ender’s Game, as it runs parallel but with a perspective change in the direction of Bean. The next three shadow books are again to be treated as a trilogy, the correct order is Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets then Shadow of the Giant.

Wait! Don’t jump the gun and read Shadows in Flight next. Now go for Ender in Exile, it ties off a loose end from Shadow of the Giant and even throws in a nice connection between Ender and the Shadow books. Also, you’ll have missed Ender while reading these three Shadow books. Ok so now you can read Shadows in Flight. It is the beginning of a link between the Ender story arc and the Shadow (Bean) story arc. Then it is Shadows Alive to complete the link, although that is not published yet, so you’ll have to wait with the rest of us.

If you still need more, well Mr Card has written plenty of short stories you can check out, I particularly enjoyed the few about Ender’s parents found in the short story collection First Meetings. Well that’s it, now you know how to read Ender’s Game and the connected works – enjoy.

As always comments are welcome below or on Twitter @EnderSpeaker

[Side note: There’s another suggested reading order in the FAQ here]

Meet Gavin Hood

The new post from the Official Ender’s Game Production Blog features Ender’s Game director, Gavin Hood. That’s him above crossing off a completed scene from a storyboard. Did you guys know he shaved his head when all the young actors had to get military haircuts? What a great guy.

Let’s just hang the kids from bungee chords, roll camera for ten hours and see what we get!  That was plan A.  Which is why we are not directing the movie and instead Gavin Hood is.  We never thought we would find a bigger fan of the novel than all of us until Gavin walked in the room…”

Bobby Cohen Talks Ender’s Game Movie

Fluxed as we are about the film, MTV News knows what’s gravitating in the world of Ender’s Game. Recently, on the set of “Now You See Me” they caught up with Bobby Cohen. Alike Alex Kurtzman in a recent interview, who expressed his galactic excitement for the cast and film, Cohen expressed his feelings toward the actors and movie also.

“Our other movie is ‘Ender’s Game,’ based on the incredible book that people have been trying to make forever. A lot of directors have tried to do it. We have an amazing script. Gavin Hood is directing, we’ve got Harrison Ford, Sir Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Hailee Steinfeld from ‘True Grit,’ Asa Butterfield from ‘Hugo.'”

He also gave us some insight into the set.

“There is a NASA stage where they literally used to build the rockets for the space shuttle that is now actually a sound stage,” he said. “They will be spending 65 some odd days about 45 minutes from here on a big giant set. So that’s going well.”

You can watch Bobby Cohen’s interview here.

Sounds stellar, no? What better way to film a space school than to film it on NASA headquarters.
