Confirmed: Viola Davis is Major Anderson in Ender’s Game Movie

Major Anderson is a Woman!

Last week we learned that American actress Viola Davis joined the cast of Ender’s Game as “a military psychologist who oversees the emotional welfare of young trainees. She also helps design the games that test their skills and resilience.” At the time her character was unnamed, and fans wondered whether she would play Major Anderson, Sister Carlotta, or a new character altogether. We reached out to the Ender’s Game spokesperson and finally heard back; Viola Davis will play the role of Major Anderson. If you’re confused, recall that Major Anderson has been written as a female in previous versions of the script.

What are your thoughts, do you love or hate the idea of Major Anderson being cast as a woman?

What’s New?

Over the weekend Ender’s Ansible switched hosts. There are still some things to be worked on: like broken links, putting the fan art back up and transferring some of the (much) older posts. All of the previous comments were lost as well as our Facebook likes (again!). Still, this is our new home so take a look around 🙂 (P.S. Notice we also have an official tumblr now, if that’s your thing.) Let me know in a comment or email what your thoughts or ideas are! Enjoy!

Ender’s Game Movie Cast Comes Together

Ender’s Game Cast Heads to New Orleans

The Ender’s Game movie cast has finally landed in New Orleans. Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley are expected to arrive some time next week, Peter actor Jimmy Pinchak leaves for New Orleans on the 13th, and Hailee Steinfeld will not arrive until March. Meanwhile, the battle school students got military haircuts.

Dink actor, Khylin Rhambo shared via Twitter:

Ender Wiggin actor, Asa Butterfield tweeted, “Got a ‘military’ look going down there. i mean, 100 years in the future and a kid saves there world, he has to have a military cut.”

Here’s a picture of Bean actor, Aramis Knight getting his hair buzzed.

Aramis also shared this picture on his Facebook with the following message: “Cast party with Gavin Hood….Amazing!!!!”

Pictured from left to right: Conor Carrol/Bernard – Asa Buttefield/Ender – Aramis Knight/Bean – Gavin Hood/Ender’s Game director – Khylin Rhambo/Dink – Moises Arias/Bonzo – Brandon Soo Hoo/Fly Molo – Suraj Partha/Alai

It looks like we’re going to get a lot of fun pictures from these actors as filming begins! Notice all their short haircuts- even Gavin! (I think Gavin’s face is great haha, who agrees?)

Viola Davis Joins the Cast of Ender’s Game Movie

Viola Davis Joins Cast

Variety is reporting that American actress Viola Davis has signed on to the Ender’s Game movie. “Davis will play a military psychologist who oversees the emotional welfare of young trainees. She also helps design the games that test their skills and resilience.” Viola Davis most recently worked on the movie The Help (an Oscar contender) and she has had a long career in television, you can read her full acting credits here.

Davis’s role in the Ender’s Game movie is surprising, because this (unnamed) character does not exist in the novel. The description most closely reminds fans of Major Anderson. (Side note: Major Anderson was a girl in previous scripts.) Perhaps Hood and his casting directors felt that the cast should have more females. Why do you think they chose to cast her?

Two Characters Dropped from Ender’s Game Movie

OSC Confirms for Fans Via Facebook

Many Ender’s Game fans have been wondering why actors for Mick and Rose the Nose have not been announced yet. One curious fan took it upon himself to ask Orson Scott Card through his Facebook page (Yes, that really is Orson Scott Card’s Facebook). Card responded, “Some characters have been cut from the screenplay – movies are much shorter than novels, and you can’t include everybody.” That’s a very polite way of saying that Mick and Rose the Nose have been cut from an earlier version of the script. Looks like our Ender’s Game movie cast is complete just in time for filming. For those of you that need “evidence” here’s a screenshot:

Thanks Jona for the tip! Will you miss these characters, or are you glad that there is now more time for other “stuff” in the Ender’s Game movie?

Confirmed for Ender’s Game Movie: Kingsley and Soo Hoo

Deadline Confirms

According to Deadline, both Ben Kingsley and Brandon Soo Hoo are now confirmed actors for the Ender’s Game movie. Kingsley has been in talks for the role of Mazer Rackham for some time. In case you missed it, you can hear a short interview he did for NPR a few weeks ago here (Skip ahead to 43:10). In the interview he calls Asa Butterfield a miracle; recall that he recently worked with Asa in the movie Hugo.

Young Brandon Soo Hoo has been cast in the role of Fly Molo. Brandon Soo Hoo is of Chinese descent. In the Ender’s Game novel, Fly Molo is of Filipino descent. He has been in the movies Tropic Thunder and G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra.

Actors for Mick and Rose the Nose have still not been announced. We’ll yet you know (if and) when they are announced. Filming starts in a few weeks on February 24th.

Edit: Robert Orci, one of the producers of the Ender’s Game movie just tweeted “Thank you, Sir Ben!!!!” in response to this news.

Ender’s Game Movie Script Still in Flux

OSC Tells Facebook

Many of you have been asking me via e-mail just how much of Ender’s Shadow will be incorporated in the Ender’s Game movie. Now I finally have an answer for you all. Late last week, one Ender fan asked Ender’s Game author, Orson Scott Card, via his Facebook and he answered! Read below:

This means that with filming beginning in just a few weeks on February 24th, the script it still being worked on/revised.

Edit: Yes, that really is Card’s Facebook.

As Ender’s Game fans know, keeping certain parts of Ender’s Shadow are imperative to possible future sequels. How much of Ender’s Shadow do you want to see in the movie?

Ender’s Game Movie Costume Fitting

The Technology Behind Flash Suits

Dink actor, Khylin Rhambo posted a picture via Facebook of a costume fitting (tip: click to make it bigger). While he doesn’t specify that this costume fitting was for the Ender’s Game movie, his IMDb filmography does not indicate that he is working on any projects concurrently and with filming beginning in roughly a month we reckon that it’s about time for costume fittings. Khylin writes that the technology in the picture was used to scan his face, take costume measurements, “and other stuff.”

We don’t know many other details, but we imagine the costume in question was for the battle school’s flash suits. All we can really say is that if the technology for fitting the costumes if this cool, there’s no telling how amazing the technology in the movie is going to be! Who else wants a costume?

Fly Molo Possibly Cast in Ender’s Game Movie

Brandon Soo Hoo Possibly Cast as Fly Molo

According to IMDb, young actor Brandon Soo Hoo has been cast as Fly Molo. Ender fans should take caution over this news, because IMDb can be edited by the general public with a paid membership. Brandon Soo Hoo is of Chinese descent. In the Ender’s Game novel, Fly Molo is of Filipino descent. Although fans many be thrilled that Fly Molo might exist in this version of  the Ender’s Game movie, this latest piece of casting news has not been confirmed anywhere else on the internet.

Brandon Soo Hoo has been in the movies Tropic Thunder and G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. You can read his full acting credits here. Do you believe he’s actually been cast in the movie?
